What a Gamma Squeeze Screener Actually Does
A gamma squeeze screener filters the market for stocks where options positioning could turn an ordinary rally into a self-reinforcing one. The mechanic, covered in depth in our guide to how gamma squeezes work, is that market makers who are short calls accumulate negative delta as the stock rises toward those strikes, and they buy stock to stay hedged. Their buying adds fuel to the move they are hedging against, and under the right conditions the loop feeds itself.
A screener cannot see the future. It can only measure whether the raw materials for that loop are present, and that distinction matters more here than for almost any other scan. The tools available today split into two unhelpful camps: subscription products that score candidates with formulas you cannot inspect, and educational articles that explain the mechanics well and then offer no filters at all. This guide takes the third path: which tools exist and what they actually disclose, the specific conditions worth screening for and why each maps to the mechanics, and the verification a screen hit still requires. It ends with an awkward fact worth knowing before you chase the setup: the most famous "gamma squeeze" of all time may not have been one.

Fintel's Potential Gamma Squeeze screener deserves credit for publishing its filter rules openly: non-OTC listing, market cap above $50 million, price above $1, short interest above 40% of float, a proprietary short squeeze score above 60, and elevated call ownership value. Full results require a subscription. The same transparency extends to results, and they are sobering: as of the screen's most recent posted run in late August 2026, the performance figure displayed on its own page read minus 154 percent, with the latest tracked trade dated August 19, 2026. The page does not label what period that number covers, but whatever it measures, it is not an advertisement. Sit with that before treating any squeeze screen as a buy list.
Building your own is realistic, because every meaningful criterion is computable from an options chain, FINRA short interest data, and basic float figures. Start from a call volume spike filter, then require short-dated expiries, ask-side execution, open interest concentrated above spot, and a small, heavily shorted float. The Filters That Matter, and Why
Every useful screening criterion corresponds to a physical requirement of the squeeze loop. If you understand the mapping, you can build the scan on any platform and adjust thresholds intelligently instead of trusting a black-box score.
- Concentrated call open interest just above the current price. This is the fuel. Dealers short those calls carry growing negative delta as price approaches the strikes, forcing them to buy stock at an accelerating rate. Open interest stacked far out-of-the-money generates little hedging pressure, and strikes already deep in-the-money have mostly spent their fuel because the hedge is largely in place. What you want is a wall of open interest the price has not yet reached.
- Short-dated expirations. Gamma is highest for near-the-money options close to expiry, which is why dealer hedge adjustments are most violent in an option's final days. A stack of calls expiring this week exerts far more hedging pressure per dollar of stock movement than the same open interest three months out.
- Aggressive call buying, not just call volume. Volume alone is directionless. Heavy call volume can mean traders are selling calls against their shares, which positions dealers long gamma, the exact opposite of squeeze fuel. The screen needs evidence that customers are initiating longs: trades printing at the ask, sweep orders that hit multiple exchanges at once, and daily volume exceeding existing open interest, which signals new positioning rather than closing trades.
- Small float and high short interest. These amplify everything. A limited supply of shares means each hedging purchase moves price more, and a crowded short base adds a second source of forced buying if the rally squeezes shorts out.
- Dealer positioning context. Aggregate gamma exposure (GEX) estimates whether market makers in a name are net long or net short gamma. Short-gamma dealers hedge in the direction of the market's move and amplify it; long-gamma dealers do the opposite and dampen it. A "squeeze candidate" in a stock where dealers appear comfortably long gamma is a contradiction the screen should catch, not surface.
The Data Under Every Screener Is Stale
Two of the core inputs cannot be fresh, no matter what a vendor charges.
Open interest is a cleared, settled figure: it is the count of contracts outstanding as of the previous session's close, and it does not update while the market trades. Any screener leaning on open interest concentration is describing yesterday's book, and positioning built intraday in weekly or same-day contracts will not appear until the next morning. Short interest is worse. FINRA collects short interest from brokerage firms twice a month, around mid-month and month-end, so the short interest figure in any screener is always days to weeks old. A crowded short base can build or cover almost entirely between prints. Treat both numbers as context, not as a live reading.
Verifying a Candidate Before You Act
A screen hit is a hypothesis, not a signal. The confirmation work is where a real setup separates from a headline:
- Confirm the calls were bought. Check whether the volume printed at the ask or the bid. Reading flow for direction is the core skill here: ask-side prints indicate buyer-initiated trades, and call volume sold to the bid builds dealer long gamma, which argues against a squeeze.
- Check that the positioning is fresh. Volume running ahead of open interest, and open interest rising the next morning, indicate new longs. Stable open interest suggests the day's volume was closing or rolling.
- Locate the fuel relative to price. Map where the call open interest actually sits. If the heavy strikes are already in-the-money, much of the forced buying has occurred and you are late.
- Ask how much of the move already happened. If implied volatility has exploded and the stock is up sharply, the screen found yesterday's squeeze. Buying calls at peak implied volatility means paying for the squeeze twice.
- Rule out mundane explanations. Earnings hedging, covered-call overwriting, and multi-leg spreads all produce call volume spikes that have nothing to do with squeeze potential.
The GameStop Caution
Every gamma squeeze screener implicitly promises to find the next GameStop. The record of the original is messier than the legend. In January 2021, GME short interest reached 122.97% of float, and the stock closed at a high of $347.51 on January 27, up more than 1,600% from its January 11 close, before touching an intraday high of $483.00 the following day, according to the SEC staff report on the episode. Individual-customer options volume in GME grew from $58.5 million on January 21 to $2.4 billion on January 27.
Yet the SEC staff concluded they "did not find evidence of a gamma squeeze in GME during January 2021." The options volume surge was driven mostly by put buying, not calls, and the data showed market makers buying call options rather than writing them, the opposite of the positioning a gamma squeeze requires. Staff attributed the rally to direct buying pressure: "it was the positive sentiment, not the buying-to-cover, that sustained the weeks-long price appreciation of GameStop stock." An ad hoc academic committee later challenged that conclusion, extending the analysis to delta hedging by both put and call market makers and arguing the evidence for squeeze dynamics was stronger than the report allowed.
The takeaway for screener users is not that gamma squeezes are myths. The mechanism is real and well documented in dealer hedging math. It is that even with full regulatory data, experts dispute whether the canonical example qualifies. A retail screener working from delayed short interest and inferred dealer positioning is producing an educated guess, several rungs below certainty.
A Screen Is Not a Strategy
Treat the output accordingly. Squeeze conditions are common and squeeze events are rare, so most flagged names will simply drift. Public screeners surface candidates after flow desks and algorithms have already seen the same data, which goes some way toward explaining Fintel's own posted results. And the reflexivity cuts both ways: the same hedging loop that accelerates a rally unwinds it when the buying stops. Per the same SEC report, GME was back below $100 by February 3 and traded as low as $40.59 by February 19, still well above its early January price, before climbing back over $100 at the end of that month.
